Suddenly, it's summer!  Look for a very warm and humid start to the Memorial Day holiday, with highs near 90 degrees.  The hot streak continues through Monday.

This Afternoon: Mostly Sunny, Hot, Humid

Tonight: Partly Cloudy, Warm

Lows: 66-70 | Wind: S 5 mph

Saturday: AM Fog, Then Hot & Humid

Highs: 87-91 | Heat Index: Mid 90s

The whirring sound of air conditioners and the stifling humidity were sure signs across the Washington area yesterday that summer had indeed arrived.  The hottest day on the month - it was 86 at Reagan National - was a preview of what looks to be a torrid holiday weekend, with highs each day around 90. Additionally, high dew points will make it feel especially uncomfortable, and heat indices could reach the mid 90s.  Which means the seasonal precautions of staying hydrated, applying sunblock and avoiding exertion during the hottest parts of the day have become priorities again.

Relief from the heat could come on Tuesday when a cold front currently across the Great Lakes is expected to impact the area. Its passage and a few showers should drop temperatures 5-10 degrees.  High temperatures could drop into the 70s by week's end when yet another front could impact the area.

NOTE: While these projected 90 degree temperatures are well above the seasonal norm of 78, they're hardly unusual.  Just last year, which eventually registered as the hottest summer ever, the high readings for May 30, 31 and June 1 were 96, 98 and 98, respectively.
