Brentwood mayor, Xzavier Montgomery-Wright, drops out of race for re-election
BRENTWOOD, Md. (AP) - Brentwood Mayor Xzavier Montgomery-Wright has withdrawn her bid for re-election amid criticism that she used town funds to pay for personal expenses.
Montgomery-Wright, who was evicted from her rented home this month, withdrew her candidacy Tuesday night before a mayoral forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters.
Forum moderator Gloria Johnson read a letter from Montgomery-Wright in which the mayor said that her term will end on Tuesday.
Montgomery-Wright was censured by the Town Council for the unauthorized use of a town debit card. She has said she is repaying the town.
Roger Rudder is the only listed candidate in the May 2 election for mayor.
Former Mayor Betty Jean Bailey-Schmiedigen is a write-in candidate.
