D.C. special election: Voters to choose new Council member

WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia voters are set to choose the newest member of the D.C. Council.

A special election is being held Tuesday to fill the at-large seat vacated by Kwame Brown when he became Council chairman.

Democrat Sekou Biddle is holding the seat on an interim basis.

He's one of the nine candidates vying to complete Brown's term, which runs through January 2013. Among the other candidates are former Councilman Vincent Orange and State Board of Education member Patrick Mara, the only Republican in the race.

Voters in Wards 4 and 8 will also choose Board of Education members Tuesday.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
