Some people may be giving up their cars or turning to hybrids on Friday’s Earth Day. Some businesses are offering up Earth Day deals in an effort to go green.

Many volunteers braved a rainy day Friday to plant some some 500 trees at the oaks landfill restoration site in Montgomery County. Once a trash dump, is now a several acre grassland park with hiking and bird watching trails.

In the District, Earth Day went indoors at the crowded and fittingly green U.S Botanic Garden, where kids learned how to pot a plant.

“I really feel like starting with the younger generation is really important to connecting to the earth and really understand the importance of being good environmental stewards,” said Ray Mims, responsible for conservation and sustainability at the Botanic Garden. It's the third year the garden has hosted an Earth Day-event.
