Fighting the rain and cold with umbrellas and coats, they still marched through the streets of D.C. A couple hundred local Catholics took part in one of more than half a dozen holy processions during a cold and wet Good Friday singing, praying and adoring.

Via Crucis - Latin for Stations of the Cross, depicts the final steps Jesus took on his way to the crucifixion. As sacrifice and veneration, parishioners took turns carrying the cross.

For a few moments, as the somber walk came through busy streets, with the help of a police escort, the daily hustle and bustle downtown came to a stop and turned to calm. A feeling of renewal for many including the Archbishop of Washington.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of the District, greeted the diverse group of people on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Matthew.

“You can see this church full of people. Great blessing,” he said.
