Gas for $4.99? It's possible in D.C.
The national average for a regular gallon of gas is now $3.89, but at the District's notoriously high-priced gas station near the Watergate it's $4.99.
The Watergate Exxon at Rock Creek Park had two customers in one hour despite that high price tag. One of them. Dottie Shackleford, told ABC7, “I have to get a gallon of gas so I can drive to where I normally get my gas in Virginia."
Just across the street the price for a gallon of regular is $4.19, if you pay with cash.
Why is the price so high at the Watergate Exxon? A man who said he was the manager couldn’t give a coherent answer. When ABC7 called Exxon, they said Capital Petroleum owns the station. Capitol Petroleum said they own the property but an independent dealer runs the station and sets the price.
