The Arlington County Board voted Tuesday to raise the maximum base towing fee to $125 and require more information on towing signs.

The fee increases are comparable with Arlington's surrounding jurisdictions, where towing fees have been rising, the board said in a statement. The board also approved a new, higher base tow fee of $500 for vehicles weighing more than 10,001 pounds.

The vote was 3 to 2; the changes will take effect immediately.

All towing signs posted on private property will have to include the name of the business and the address that owns the rights to the space from which the vehicle was towed. This is meant to help drivers figure out more easily who to contact if their car has been towed.

Towing operators and property owners will have one year from the date of enactment to comply with these new rules.
