Haymarket car crash claims second victim
A second victim in last week's fatal car accident on Logmill Road in Haymarket has died, police say.
Authorities say that Savanna Kidane Mouratidis, 15, of Haymarket, died due to her injuries last Friday. It’s believed she was sitting in the back passenger seat at the time of the crash.
Mouratidis is the second teenager to lose her life as a result of the April 20 early-morning accident. Kendra Tucker, 15, also died in the accident.
A 14-year-old girl, a 17-year-boy and an 18-year-old male were also injured.
Police say that the car they were traveling in hit a deer at a high rate of speed, causing the car to careen into a tree. Five teens were in the car at the time of the crash.
Wearing purple, Savanna Mouratidis’s favorite color, her friends came to the crash scene Monday. Samia Chavez, the victim’s friend, said she saw Savanna in the hospital after the accident.
“Seeing her … something hits you and it made you believe she was going to make it,” Samia said.
Savanna, a freshman at Battlefield, was remembered for her great sense of humor and her ability to comfort others who were in need.
Grief counselors are at Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia Monday to assist students.
As the roadside memorial grows with tokens of love for the latest victim, the young people who knew the girls struggle to address their feelings. They know speed and a rolling road were factors in the crash. And authorities said none of the occupants in the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
“Honestly? I think they need to take it to every high school and just show what can happen when you're speeding or when you're on a road as dangerous as this one,” said Socrate Duharte, a friend.
