Haynesworth indicted on misdemeanor sexual abuse charge
Washington Redskins player Albert Haynesworth was indicted Tuesday on a charge of misdemeanor sexual abuse.
Haynesworth's attorney A. Scott Bolden told TBD the charges were "disappointing, regretful and a difficult case for the government to prove."
"My client will continue to fight these charges consistently and as aggressively as possible in court," he wrote in an email. "I remain confident that he will be vindicated in the end."
Haynesworth is accused of fondling a server while at the rooftop lounge of the upscale W Hotel in Northwest Washington. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, he faces up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, according to U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen. An arraignment date has not yet been set.
Haynesworth was among a group of patrons in a cordoned-off section of the P.O.V. Lounge on the rooftop terrace of the W Hotel on February 13, 2011, according to government evidence. At about 2 a.m., Haynesworth allegedly slid a credit card down the front of his server’s dress and fondled her breast.
The troubled player signed a seven-year, $100 million contract two years ago. Last season, he was sidelined without pay for "conduct detrimental to the club."
Redskins fan Chris Mott isn't surprised that it’s difficult to find a Haynesworth jersey in a sports apparel store these days. "A lot of people shouldn't have his jersey out,” said Redskins fan Chris Mott, adding Haynesworth is “not a good influence for the community"
Tristen Monroe, who frequents the W Hotel, believes the employee's claim should be carefully scrutinized. "Everyone should be given a fair trial,” she said.
The attorney’s office stressed that an indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of criminal laws and is not evidence of guilt.
