Local Brits celebrate wedding
April 29, 2011 - 06:29 pm
There's a tradition in England that they hold big street parties after a royal wedding. But transplanted Brits couldn't be home to celebrate, so they had to make their own.
Thousands of miles from home, Brits staged their own street party Friday at The British school of Washington. Some had been up since 3 a.m. Students dressed in their royal finest – hats, dresses fir for a princess and tiaras – and celebrated the marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton.
After making crowns, party goers signed a congratulatory banner to send overseas and then cut their own wedding cake.
“It makes us feel like we're home,” said one. “It's fun to have American friends experiencing with us.”
