Karl Zuelke, U of Md. prof, arrested
An instructor at the University of Maryland faces some serious legal troubles.
Baltimore police had an open warrant out for Professor Karl Zuelke's arrest.
According to court documents, he was charged with second degree assault last month. The complainant listed is Dory Hoffman, who took Zuelke to court for domestic violence. Campus police escorted the English lecturer away in handcuffs.
His students came out of class when they witnessed the arrest. “When we came back out, we saw our professor in handcuffs being walked down the police cruiser,” said Mikias Wolde, adding “I couldn't really believe it.”
“I was really unexpected because he is a really good professor,” said Linda Otieno, another student. “I didn't expect that from him.”
“I was pretty shocked about it especially considering the earlier arrest of a teacher for murder. It's just a worrying trend that we've had two teachers arrested in two semesters,” said Brian Fiske, a UMd student.
At worst, students called Zuelke a little opinionated, but by and large he seems popular. They say if he has a dark side, they never saw it.
The Baltimore Police Department and state's attorney could not provide any more details on the case Thursday.
