Va. Governor Bob McDonnell to tour tornado-ravaged Washington County
GLADE SPRING, Va. (AP) - Gov. Bob McDonnell is planning to visit a southwest Virginia area hit hard by tornadoes.
McDonnell will visit Washington County on Friday, touring the area and meeting with volunteers and residents affected by the storms.
Emergency officials say four people were killed in Washington County as a storm carved a path more than two miles wide and four miles long near Interstate 81. Another 50 were injured.
Another woman was killed in Halifax County as storms blew through the state early Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, spawning tornados, hail and heavy rain and winds.
McDonnell declared a state of emergency, which allows state resources to be used in local recovery efforts.
This week's storms mark the third time this month that tornadoes have hit Virginia communities.
