Vincent Orange wins D.C. Council At-large race

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat Vincent B. Orange is claiming victory in the special election for an at-large seat on the D.C. Council.
According to unofficial returns from the city's 143 precincts, Orange had about 28 percent of the vote and was more than 1,100 votes ahead of Republican Patrick Mara, who had nearly 26 percent. Orange previously represented Ward 5 on the Council from 1999 to 2007.
There were nine candidates vying to fill the seat vacated by Kwame Brown when he became Council chairman. Democrat Sekou (SAY-koo) Biddle, who was endorsed by Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Brown, was third with about 20 percent.
Absentee and provisional ballots won't be counted until May 6, but Mara conceded late Tuesday night.
