17th Street to close Wednesday evening
All 17th Street lanes will temporarily close between Constitution and Independence Avenues beginning Wednesday evening, May 11, 2011, until early Thursday, May 12.
The National Park Service will temporarily close all traffic there starting at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday until 4:00 a.m. on Thursday. This closure is necessary to install lane restrictions and signs in order to perform work on 17th Street, the Park Service said in a statement.
For approximately 60 days both northbound lanes on 17th Street will be closed to all traffic. Both southbound lanes will be converted to one lane in each direction. Two-way traffic will be possible at all times during this first phase of the project. Work on the levee itself will progress from the middle of 17th Street east toward the Washington Monument.
When the levee construction work is completed on the east side of 17th Street, which is the side closest to the Washington Monument, work will move to the west side of 17th street. The traffic pattern will then reverse, with the northbound lanes converted to one lane in each direction, for approximately 60 additional days, while both southbound lanes will be completely closed.
No work will occur between July 3rd and July 7th; the lanes will remain closed, however. The work is scheduled to be completed in late 2011.
