Investigators: Al Qaeda plotted attack on U.S. trains
Updated: May 6, 2011 - 12:53 pm
Authorities say that Al Qaeda was plotting to strike the U.S. again, this time focusing on the nation’s public transportation systems.
The raid of Osama bin Laden's compound revealed his plans to specifically target trains and transit services on the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
Seized computers and cell phones inside the hide-away confirm Al Qaeda was still plotting against the U.S. One plan reportedly was to tip a train by tampering with its rails, to force the train off the track at a valley or bridge.
Police with dogs are combing Union Station Thursday night, sniffing out anything or anyone suspicious. “They're plotting as we speak now, so all we can do is hope and pray nothing else happens,” said Philip Gibson, who lives in the District.
