Animal rights group buys Michael Vick's compound
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - An animal rights group has bought NFL star Michael Vick's former dogfighting compound.
Dogs Deserve Better of Tipton, Pa., closed on the Surry County property Friday. The group intends to turn the house and the 15 acres it sits on into a rehabilitation center for chained and penned dogs.
The home previously served as headquarters for the Bad Newz Kennel.
The home cost about $600,000 and the group raised a 30 percent down payment through donations. Ultimately, the group wants to raise $3 million to fully pay for the site, install fencing and build a facility for the dogs. The house will be used for offices.
Dogs Deserve Better founder Tamira Thayne says it's important to build a facility on the Vick property because of its symbolism.
