Another D.C. voting rights protest planned
May 11, 2011 - 05:56 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Advocates for District of Columbia voting rights in Congress are planning another protest outside the Capitol.
The nonpartisan group DC Vote has staged a series of protests to highlight what it calls unwelcome intrusions by Congress into local affairs. Mayor Vincent Gray was arrested at one such protest last month.
Wednesday's protest comes on the eve of an unusual hearing on Gray's proposed budget by an oversight subcommittee. DC Vote points out that the district has balanced its budget for several years running while Congress has failed to balance the federal budget.
Congress must approve the district's budget, and the city's leaders are required by law to submit a balanced budget.
