VEHICLE CRASH
Fatal crash closes parts of I-66
A two-vehicle crash on I-66 Monday afternoon killed a South Carolina man, Virginia State Police reported. According to witnesses, a 1997 BMW sedan was traveling west on I-66, weaving across the lanes, when the driver apparently lost control, police said.
The car ran off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail, then crossed back into the westbound lanes and collided with a 1999 Ford Explorer.
The force of the crash spun and overturned the Ford several times. It finally came to rest on its passenger side. The Ford’s driver was not wearing a seatbelt, police said, and was partially ejected from the car. He died at the scene. The male driver of the BMW was not injured.
Police said charges are pending.
Westbound lanes on I-66 were completely blocked for hours just before the Fairfax County Parkway.Traffic was diverted onto Route 50. Delays lasted several hours.
Virginia State Police were called at 3:43 p.m. The crash involved two vehicles.
