WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia leaders are taking to the streets yet again to protest restrictions on using local taxpayer dollars to fund abortions for poor women.

Councilwomen Muriel Bowser, Mary Cheh and Yvette Alexander will lead a protest Wednesday afternoon across the street from the Capitol. Cheh was unable to attend a similar protest last month at which Mayor Vincent Gray was arrested.

The district's ability to spend its own money to pay for abortions was taken away as part of the last month's federal budget deal. Republicans have generally prohibited the district from spending money on abortions when they've been in control of Congress, and House Republicans are now trying to make the ban permanent. Advocates for D.C. voting rights say such decisions should be made at the local level.
