The 15-year-old charged with shooting a D.C. police officer has been ordered held pending trial and will undergo a forensic medical evaluation before returning to court Tuesday afternoon.

The detective investigating the shooting testified at least two officers exchanged gunfire with the teen. The detective was unable to say who fired the first shot.

The teen was found with a .38 special revolver that had five spent casings in the chamber. The sixth round misfired.

The detective testified that at least two officers fired at least 5 total shots.

One of the charges includes assault with a dangerous weapon against a second victim. That victim has not been identified.

The D.C. police officer is in good condition after being shot early Saturday morning, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says.

Authorities say that officers responded to the 700 block of Crittenden Street NE at about 5:10 a.m. to find a teenager with a gun on the porch of a house.

Officers ordered the suspect, a 15-year-old male, to drop the weapon. When he didn't, police say gunfire was exchanged. Lanier described the shooting as an ambush.

Police said the officer was hit multiple times. Lanier said that the officer was shot three times - once in the shoulder, once in the neck and once into his bulletproof vest.

The suspect fled but was found shortly thereafter and arrested. He was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed. The suspect was also treated and released from a hospital after being scratched on the arm.
