WASHINGTON (AP) - New Census data shows that people in their 20s and 30s have driven Washington's entire population gain in the past 10 years.

The figures released Thursday show that D.C. has 35,000 additional people between the ages of 20 and 34, a 23 percent jump from the 2000 Census.
Washington's population increased from 572,000 to 601,000 during that period.

Demographers and urban experts say the district is becoming more appealing to college graduates, with its strong job market and mix of coffee shops, condominiums and nightlife.

The district also saw an increase in people between the ages of 55 and 64.

But the number of children ages 5 to 14 fell 20 percent. Experts aren't sure whether the district's younger residents will stay when they get married and have children.
