Florida Avenue Baptist Church in D.C. goes solar-powered
May 3, 2011 - 06:54 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - A Baptist congregation in Washington is becoming the first black church in the District of Columbia to go solar.
The Florida Avenue Baptist Church says it's holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning on a 10-kilowatt, rooftop solar system that will cut its electricity costs and reduce its carbon footprint.
Washington-based Volt Energy is supplying photovoltaic panels for the project.
Volt co-owner Glibert Campbell III says the company is also helping the church establish a "green ministry" to educate church members and the community at large about renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles and sustainable agriculture.
