FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Four Frederick County high school students are being honored for a project that makes and sends quilts to wounded U.S. service members.

The school system said Thursday the Quilts of Valor project has won a gold medal in a state competition sponsored by SkillsUSA.The students will travel in June to Kansas City to compete for a national award from the vocational education group, which is based in Leesburg, Va.

School officials say the students oversaw the creation, fabrication and shipping of 27 quilts by their 350 classmates to wounded service members in hospitals overseas.

Quilts of Valor is a Washington-based program that invites people to make quilts for U.S. armed services members affected by war.
