Justin Navarro sentenced to 40 years
A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 40 years behind bars for a fatal 2009 stabbing in NE D.C.
Justin Navarro, also known as “Fool,” was convicted by a D.C. Superior Court jury in March 2011 of first degree murder while armed, obstruction of justice, tampering with evidence, and carrying a dangerous weapon.
He was convicted of killing Kevin Massey, 31, a gay man.
Authorities said the crime stemmed from an incident where Massey helped Navarro pull up his pants outside an apartment while Navarro was allegedly high on PCP. Soon afterward, Navarro began to get taunted about his sexual orientation. At least once, he was heard denying the rumors and vowed to kill the victim, authorities said.
On Nov. 6, about a month after the pants incident, Navarro knocked on the door of Massey’s apartment and asked “where’s the faggot,” authorities said. Navarro entered the apartment, got a butcher knife from the kitchen and then stabbed Massey about 20 times, including 15 times in the back.
At trial, Navarro claimed self-defense.
