Luis Rivera found guilty of 2009 rape, faces life in prison
May 11, 2011 - 11:28 am
A jury found a Hyattsville man guilty of first-degree rape Tuesday in connection with the 2009 sexual assault of a woman in Chillum.
30-year-old Luis Rivera is facing life in jail over the conviction.
The jury found that in November 2009, Rivera grabbed a 25-year-old woman at knifepoint in Chillum Community Park, near the West Hyattsville Metro station. He then pulled her into the bushes and raped her.
"While it may be difficult quantify what 'justice' actually means to a victim of rape, we know at least that this perpetrator will be spending a great deal of time behind bars, where he belongs," said Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.
Deliberations by the jury only lasted three hours before reaching the guilty verdict.
