Metro's 152 new hybrid buses

WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro is touting new hybrid-electric buses that the transit agency says will be more reliable and more fuel efficient.

The Washington Post says Metro has an $89.3 million contract with a Canadian company to buy 152 of the new buses that cost $571,737 each.

Metro will start to roll out the new buses this month and the plan is to have all of the new buses on the road by the end of the year.

Metro has replaced 401 of its older buses that run on diesel with hybrids and the new buses will bring its hybrid fleet to 553.

Officials say some of the older buses break down every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
