FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - A chemistry teacher from Frederick is the 2011 National Teacher of the Year.
The Washington-based Council of Chief State School Officers said Sunday it has selected Michelle Shearer for the honor.
Shearer teaches at Urbana High School in Frederick.
The 14-year classroom veteran was recognized for her passion, her embrace of technology and her focus on teacher-student interaction.
Shearer also is fluent in American Sign Language and taught at the Maryland School for the Deaf.
She was named Maryland Teacher of the Year in October.
Shearer will get a day off Tuesday when she and the other state teachers of the year travel to the White House to be recognized by President Barack Obama.
