With tens of thousands of motorcyclists in the area for Rolling Thunder, a serious motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon sent a patient to a hospital by Medstar2 helicopter and closed the Beltway.
It happened before 12:45 p.m. on the outer loop of the Beltway at Telegraph Road.
Virginia State Police Spokesperson Corinne Geller later told ABC7 this was a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle eastbound on I-495 near Telegraph Road.
The motorcyclist was flown to Inova Fairfax for treatment of serious injuries.
The motorcyclist was not part of the Rolling Thunder ride, Geller says.
According to the Alexandria Firefighters union, the outer loop had to be completely shut down.
VDOT reports that delays stretched approximately six miles to the Springfield Interchange.
Most lanes reopened around 1:30 PM.
