Osama bin Laden dead: Bin Laden's wife not killed in raid, White House says
Updated: May 3, 2011 - 09:22 am
A woman killed during the U.S. raid at Osama bin Laden’s compound was not his wife, White House counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan says.
Brennan said Tuesday that the woman killed appears to be the wife of another man who lived within the Pakistan compound.
Earlier reports said that bin Laden used his wife as a human shield during the attack. But Brennan says bin Laden’s wife was wounded in the assault, but it’s unclear if either woman was used as a shield.
It’s also unclear if bin Laden had a gun, Brennan says.
Brennan says U.S. forces were told take bin Laden into custody if he was willing to surrender and if they felt that the situation was secure. But the assaulters determined that was not the case.
Through a process of weeks, president Obama decided that a raid would maximize the chance of success in capturing bin Laden and would also minimize the number of casualties and wouldn’t require involving Pakistini forces.
