A little more than a day after President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden was slain by U.S. forces, people in the Capitol began reflecting on what the death means to them.

At a Memorial to the Pentagon victims of 9/11, Carole Reuben assisted visitors as she and her husband Jesse often do. The shrine is to the 184 victims killed. Some were inside the Pentagon at the time of the crash. Others, like the Reuben’s son Todd Reuben, were on American Flight 77.

Bittersweet is how the Reubens describe news of bin Laden’s demise.

“We were happy for the country, but not so happy or ourselves because our Todd was not coming back,” said Jesse Reuben.

Outside the White House, John Mendes and his wife spoke about their son, 24-year-old Army Specialist Keith Mendes, who is hospitalized at Walter Reed after he was shot last month in Afghanistan.

“He's doing a lot better than when I first got the report,” John Mendes said.

They said they’re happy bin Laden has been stopped and they think the U.S. should leave Afghanistan.

“I think it’s about time we pull our young men from Afghanistan,” John Mendes said.
