Iraq vet walking for awareness
May 27, 2011 - 06:16 pm
Troy Yocum is helping military families one step at a time.
Yocum is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq. He’s now walking 7,000 miles to raise awareness and funds for veterans.
His wife, Mareike, drives alongside him for support – both for Troy and their dogs, who are too old to make the trek.
They started 14 months ago in Louisville. From there, they went to San Diego and then to New Orleans. On Thursday, they arrived in Washington for the Memorial Day weekend.
So far, the trip has raised $200,000. Yocum’s goal: $5 million. He’s scheduled to be recognized at Monday’s Nationals game before marching on to Boston.
