For Ayala’s widow Melissa, it is a bittersweet moment to see her husband's name unveiled on the National Law Enforcement officer's memorial. While it’s every police spouse’s worst nightmare, Melissa Ayala said it’s also comforting.

“My kids can always come here and see their dad's name and know that he did his job to the best of his ability,” she said.

Sgt. Ayala was killed in a single vehicle crash as he raced in his cruiser to a call last April. At the time, he and his wife had a one-year old son named Hector Jr. She was expecting triplets. Now little hector is two and the triplets, Angelica, Gabriella and Victoria, are almost one year old.

“My children are what bring me joy every day,” Melissa said.

She says she'll be eternally grateful for the support she's received from the community and Ayala’s fellow officers. His best friend on the force say he's found comfort in seeing the babies thrive.

“One of them looks just like Hector I. look at her and I just start laughing because I see him. It's a good feeling,” Officer Phil Meyer said.

“He was a wonderful son, brother husband and father,” Ayala’s widow said. “His joy was his children and he sure did leave a legacy behind.”
