Ticks popping up in Virginia
May 17, 2011 - 06:20 pm
There’s a new pest in town.
Authorities have found more than a hundred Gulf Coast ticks in the tall grasses of a Fair Oaks landfill. Luckily, the plot is between several busy roadways like !-66, which provides them little opportunity to spread.
While Gulf Coast ticks can’t kill you, Lyme disease from deer ticks can. According to the National Capital Lyme Disease Association, the number of cases has doubled since 2008.
Peak tick season will last from now until June. And local outdoorsmen said they’ve noticed a spike.
“Every time I take a mountain bike ride out, especially in Laurel Hill, seven or eight is not uncommon to take off,” said Fairfax resident Anthony Haynes.
