The man who was injured in Monday's hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of his wife remains in critical condition Thursday as Montgomery County Police released the identities of the victims.
Police say that 43-year-old Demetrio Gomez Sanchez is still in critical condition at Suburban Hospital. His wife, 39-year-old Maria De la Paz, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.
Police say the couple exited a bus near the intersection of Viers Mill Road and Centerhill Street around 9:42 p.m. Monday. When they entered the roadway, they were hit by a white BMW traveling eastbound. The driver of the striking vehicle initially stopped, then fled the scene.
Tomas Matamoros lives next door to where the hit-and-run occurred. He was the first to come across the victims in the road.
"He was calling for help," Matamoros said of the male victim.
He said he went to see if the female victim was alive but determined she was dead.
Police eventually located the driver, and a passenger, who were inside the striking vehicle at the time of the crash, in two separate locations in a nearby neighborhood. They were not inside the vehicle when they were found.
The driver, 29-year-old Pierre Michel, of Silver Spring, was not injured in the collision.
The passenger has been identified as 29-year-old Christopher Forker, of Sharpsburg, Maryland.
Some people tell ABC7 News this is a busy intersection and many nearly get hit while trying to get to the bus stop.
Police say the investigation is still ongoing and anyone who either saw it or know anything about the accident should contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit.
