Two women arrested for drunkenness
A woman was arrested for being drunk in public and child neglect Thursday in Spotsylvania. When a friend of her arrived to pick up the mother’s car, the friend, too, was arrested and charged with DUI, the Spotsylvania sheriff’s office reported.
A deputy responded to numerous 911 calls Wednesday evening reporting a possibly intoxicated driver. At the parking lot the callers indicated, Deputy George Lamont spotted the driver of a gray car trying to get a small child from the back seat.
The driver, 23-year-old Sophia McMahon, smelled of alcohol and showed other signs of intoxication, police said. The deputy determined that McMahon had twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system. She was arrested for being drunk in public and child neglect. The child was turned over to family members.
McMahon had made arrangements for a friend, 23-year-old Jacqueline Johnson, to come and pick her car. When she arrived, Johnson, too, was intoxicated. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Both women were incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
