Vincent Gray hiring probe: D.C. Council to vote on court order
UPDATE 9:46 a.m.: After Sulaimon Brown and Cherita Whiting failed to show for a May 13 hearing, the D.C. Council will consider legislation today to direct the council's attorney to go to D.C. Superior Court to enforce subpoenas to compel Brown, Whiting, and Peyton Brooks to appear before a committee.
This is the text of the action under consideration:
"For the reasons set forth in section 2, the Council of the District of Columbia directs its General Counsel to file a petition in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia for the enforcement of the Committee on Government Operations and the Environment subpoenas to compel Sulaimon Brown, Cherita Whiting, and Peyton Brooks to appear before the Committee on a date to be determined by the Council under penalty of contempt, and to take any additional necessary and appropriate steps to ensure compliance with the subpoenas.
"Sec. 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately."
D.C. Council to vote on court order
WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. Council is set to vote on whether to have a court enforce subpoenas for three witnesses in its probe of Mayor Vincent Gray's hiring practices.
A Council committee is investigating accusations of nepotism and cronyism by Gray's administration.
The committee has yet to hear from Sulaimon Brown, a former mayoral candidate who alleges he was given cash and promised a job last year during the campaign. His accusations have led to a criminal probe by the FBI and U.S. Attorney's office. Brown has vowed not to cooperate with the Council probe.
The Council will vote Tuesday on whether to ask the Superior Court to order Brown and two other witnesses to appear before the committee.
