WASHINGTON (AP) - The chairwoman of a D.C. Council panel examining the hiring practices of Mayor Vincent Gray says former mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown has been served with a subpoena.

The Committee on Government Operations and the Environment has been looking into several questionable hires by Gray, including that of Brown. He claims Gray promised him a job and that Gray's campaign workers gave him cash to keep his campaign afloat last year. Brown was highly critical of former Mayor Adrian Fenty, whom Gray defeated.

Brown, however, told ABC7's Sam Ford that he has not been served.

Council member Mary Cheh released a statement on Thursday saying that subpoenas had been served to both Brown and Cherita Whiting, a friend of Gray's who had been working at the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Washington Post says Brown is scheduled to testify on May 13.
