Walt Whitman Middle School evacuated after water main break
About 900 students were evacuated from Walt Whitman Middle School in Fairfax County after a water pipe burst, fire officials say.
Fairfax County Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Rooney says that power and water to the school were cut and the campus, in the 2600 block of Parkers Lane, was evacuated for about two and a half hours.
Fairfax County Public Schools spokesman Paul Regnier says a flooding issue caused the school's evacuation.
Two students were treated for heat exposure during the evacuation. The school has reopened, but many parents got calls from their kids and picked them up.
Several parents who spoke to ABC7 have expressed displeasure that the school did not contact them after the incident.
Regnier says that the evacuation and the cutoff of electricity complicated the notification of parents about the evacuation.
