A 30-year-old man was convicted of a brazen mid-day shooting at a Northeast D.C. school in April 2008, U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr. reported. Two people were injured in the shooting.

Wesley R. Johnson Jr. was convicted by a jury in D.C. Superior Court of a total of 33 charges in the case. They included assault with intent to kill while armed, carjacking while armed and assault on a police officer. Johnson pled not guilty by reason of insanity.

Government evidence showed that Johnson walked into the Excel Institute, a vocational training school on V Street Northeast that he attended, carrying a Tech-9 machine gun. He shot the school’s president in the face and tried to shoot one of his instructors in the chest, but the machine gun jammed.

He left the school and, having unlocked the gun again, shot a woman on the street.

He fled to a nearby bank and carjacked two people sitting in a Ford Focus in the bank parking lot. Two officers spotted Johnson driving the Ford shortly afterwards and pulled him over. He first waited for them to approach the car, but then shot at the officers and sped off.

Johnson eventually abandoned the car and carjacked another vehicle, but then collided with a police officer.

Johnson, of Fort Washington, Md., will be sentenced in July 2011, authorities said. He faces mandatory-minimum sentences totaling 60 years. The trial lasted nearly four weeks, authorities said.
