Who gets an MPD escort?
His high-speed police escort from Dulles airport to his show at Constitution Hall had Charlie Sheen giddy. Rocker Jon Bon Jovi got an escort too. So did the Red Sox, Cowboys and Giants.
MPD Chief Cathy Lanier initially said – and reasserted Friday – that police escorts are for the president, vice president and visiting heads of state.
She called for an internal investigation, stating someone did not follow procedure approving an escort for Sheen. But earlier this week, the chief acknowledged some celebrities do get escorts.
“We've never said no celebrities,” she said. “You can’t have a policy that says there is never a time.”
Since many of the celebrities cover the cost of the escorts, some residents wonder what the big deal is.
“To give them police escorts - ah I think it is ok,” said Lawanda Saunder, a District resident.
