MOSCOW (AP) - Russian news agencies are reporting 44 people have been killed in a passenger jet crash in northwestern Russia.
RIA Novosti and ITAR-Tass are citing Emergencies Ministry officials as saying the plane crash-landed on a highway en route to the city of Petrozavodsk from Moscow. They say the Russian-made Tu-134 jet landed a few hundred yards (meters) short of the runway.
They say eight people who survived the crash are in critical condition in hospital. Earlier reports put the toll at 40.
