Bethesda businesses prepare for U.S. Open
Thanks to the U.S. open, businesses are having a good week in Bethesda. The golf tournament tees off Thursday, but spectators are already flocking to area businesses.
In addition to watching the golf tournament at the congressional country club, visitors will spend money at their hotel, local restaurants or on merchandise.
Corporations spend big bucks to sponsor the U.S. Open and entertain clients.
It's the first open hosted in the Washington area since 1997. Officials estimate it will lead to more than $140 million spent this week in the region.
Susan Lacz is the CEO of Ridgewell's Catering based in Bethesda. She says the company has been the lead caterer now for 14 U.S. Open but usually not in their own backyard.
“This is an enormous job that involves lots of people,” said Lacz. Not only vendors will make money, but also their contractors.
To feed 30,000 people a day, Ridgewell’s Catering bought 10,000 pounds of local poultry, 18,000 pounds of beef and many other fresh Washington area farm ingredients.
Ridgewell's alone added 350 jobs.
Thousands will be working on the golf course itself, including caddies, security guards, bartenders, cooks and bottle washers.
