The move was made after drivers this week protested a proposal that would have awarded the contract to Virginia-based Dulles Airport Taxi Inc., which would have paid the state $1 million more for the airport rights than current concession holder BWI Taxi Management.

Drivers said they feared that Dulles Airport Taxi would reduce the number of owner-operated taxis at the airport.

Comptroller Peter Franchot says he wants Maryland's Department of Transportation to have more time to review the contract and find a way to balance state revenues with the needs of taxi drivers.

BWI taxi drivers protest concession proposal

Taxi drivers at BWI Marshall Airport aren't happy with the state considering a proposal that would award the airport's taxi concession to a Virginia-based company.

Drivers on Tuesday staged a protest, a day before the proposal was scheduled to be heard by the state Board of Public Works. The Dulles Airport Taxi Inc.'s $7.1 million bid is for a four-year concession contract.

The drivers at the protest say they feared the company would reduce the number of owner-operated taxis at the airport.

The bid is about $1 million more than current concession holder BWI Taxi Management and it is for exclusive rights to pick up fares at BWI.
