ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A judge is scheduled to hear arguments on whether he should reconsider a ruling he issued last week that declared the law banning corporations from contributing to federal political candidates.

U.S. District Judge James Cacheris tossed out part of the indictment against two businessmen who were accused of illegally reimbursing straw donors to Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. Critics accused Cacheris of overestimating the impact of last year's Citizens United case, a landmark campaign-finance ruling from the Supreme Court.

Earlier this week the judge ordered prosecutors and defense lawyers to submit additional briefs on whether he should reconsider his ruling. The hearing is scheduled for Friday.

In his opinion, Cacheris said that under the Citizens United case, corporations enjoy the same rights as citizens to donate to a campaign.
