D.C. police officer Aisha Hackley arrested on theft charge

A District of Columbia police officer has been arrested on a theft charge, accused of stealing money from an 85-year-old woman, who spoke exclusively to ABC7’s John Gonzalez.
Court documents say 35-year-old Sgt. Aisha Hackley was arrested Tuesday at the headquarters of the Second District, where she works.
Hackley is accused of forging the signature of an elderly woman she met during a fraud investigation and then depositing 10 checks totaling more than $43,000.
The elderly woman asked not to be identified. The D.C. resident can't believe a police officer who was sent to help her is accused of robbing her.
“She would visit me like once a week... I felt she was friend," the woman said.
The woman first called police because of harassing phone calls she received after claiming to be the victim of a phony lottery scam. Hackley began visiting her last December during the apparent fraud investigation.
"Page after page,” of checks, says the woman, “which weren't my signature."
The victim said the officer even gave her a ride once to the bank. Last month, the victim contacted her bank to report the suspicious checks.
Hackley, who was awarded “officer of the month” honors in 2003 for the apprehension of two juvenile car thefts, was detained and arrested while on duty.
In a statement, D.C. police said its Internal Affairs Division received a tip from a police officer in April 2011 that led to the investigation and arrest of Hackley.
"Her police powers have been revoked. This matter is now before the courts and we cannot comment further at this time," the statement said.
The documents say Hackley told a Bank of America fraud investigator that she had met the woman last December after the woman reported being a victim of a lottery scam.
Her attorney, Kenneth Auerbach, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Hackley appeared Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court. She's due back on June 30.
