Drug smuggling suspect arrested at Dulles
A Nigerian man was arrested at Dulles International Airport for smuggling 97 thumb-sized pellets of heroin into the country inside his body.
Rasheed Adewale Martins, 54, arrived at Dulles from Paris last week. Customs and Border Protection officers found alleged inconsistencies in Martins’ story when interviewing him.
An X-ray revealed that he had foreign objects inside of him. He eventually passed three pounds, two ounces worth of heroin in almost one hundred pellets.
The heroin has a street value of about $100,000.
“This arrest and seizure significantly illustrates how Customs and Border Protection officers blend training and experience with non-intrusive inspection technologies to successfully intercept a narcotics smuggling attempt,” said Christopher Hess, CBP Port Director for the Port of Washington, D.C. “CBP employees take very serious our mission to protect American citizens against things that could cause our families, friends and neighbors harm, including dangerous narcotics.”
Martins was taken into custody.
