UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - The Evangel Cathedral is celebrating the life of the Rev. Bishop John L. Meares.
Meares died last week at age 91 and a homegoing tribute service is being held at the cathedral in Upper Marlboro on Friday morning.
Meares, a white faith healer from Memphis started the Evangel Cathedral, one of the largest black congregations in the region, more than 50 years ago. Officials say his "zeal for spiritual unity was an instrumental part of racial reconciliation in the Body of Christ throughout his ministry."
Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, amd former State's Attorney Glen Ivey are expected to attend.
