Woman struck, killed while crossing Georgia Avenue in Wheaton
Police are trying to piece together a fatal pedestrian accident in Wheaton.
Shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday, 24-year-old Etsegenet Hurrisa, of Silver Spring, was crossing Georgia Avenue near Regina Drive when she was struck by a silver 2007 Volkswagon Eos that was traveling northbound.
The car then went off the road, crashed through a fence, and ended up in a nearby backyard. Hurrisa was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the striking vehicle, 18-year-old Carlos Arias, of Silver Spring, remained on the scene. He was taken to Suburban Hospital with minor injuries. A front seat passenger in the vehicle, 17-year-old Pool Ubillus, also from Silver Spring, was taken to Holy Cross with minor injuries.
Police say it's unclear if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call police at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
