Harris' Heroes: Victoria Davis wins college scholarship
A D.C. high school graduate is on her way to college after hitting all the right notes during a local talent competition.
This singer's story kicks off a new series of stories at ABC7 called Harris' Heroes, in which we spotlight people who make a brighter future for children.
Victoria Davis is making a better future for herself.
As a 17-year-old high school student, Davis has a voice beyond her years. She delivered an unforgettable performance of the song “I am changing” from the musical hit Dreamgirls on stage at the Kennedy Center. Her performance earned her a $12,000 college scholarship as the winner of the D.C. capital stars talent competition.
“It's about sending a message to people and giving them this feeling that I am changing … and I am changing for the better,” Davis said about her song choice.
A 12th grader at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Davis admits she's had to grow into being the performer she is today.
“I still sing in class,” she admits. Now she also plans to attend the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, to eventually become a classical performer.
That’s the goal of the D.C. college access program: helping students District-wide attend college.
“The kids who dream, not just of being performers, but doctors, lawyers, news broadcasters … college is about making the dream come true,” said Argelia Rodriguez, the program’s spokesperson.
The deadly metro crash of 2009 almost derailed Davis’ plans. She was the train that was struck by an oncoming train, a collision that killed nine people.
She came away with some injuries -- but, fortunately, it didn't affect her voice or her determination.
With the competition behind her and college ahead, Davis is determined to not only achieve her dreams, but show others they can, too.
“Just like being a president,” she said. “It's so possible.”
