An assistant principal at Greenville Elementary School who was arrested Wednesday for allegedly possessing and distributing child pornography faced a judge for the first time Thursday morning.

Joshua Myers, 29, of Warrenton, Va., allegedly told an undercover agent in an online chat that he had traveled to California to have sex with a child, according to court documents. Myers also said he had had sexual contact with children between nine and 14 years old.

Myers was set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge John Anderson this morning.

Myers has held posts with three Fauquier County elementary schools over the past seven years, the county's school Superintendent Jonathan Lewis told ABC7. Myers was set to become the principal at Brumfield Elementary School by July 2011.

"We just don't understand such things like this. So to say it is upsetting or disturbing - we literally don't understand how people can do this type of thing," said Kirk Demadaler, a Fauquier resident.

Myers move to Brumfield will no longer happen, officials say. The school board is working to fill the now-open position.

Superintendent Lewis said Myers has been suspended without pay pending investigation. He wouldn't comment directly on the allegations but said Myers passed a background check when he was hired.

Myers allegedly gave the agent the password to folders on his computer that contained child pornography, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia stated. The undercover officer allegedly viewed several videos of child pornography on Myer’s shared folder, including a video of a woman sexually abusing a two-year-old boy.

"I know parents that have kids here and I'm sure they're going to be horrified," said Fauquier County resident Mary Ann Henderson

Myers was arrested Wednesday at his home following a search. He allegedly indicated he had child pornography stored on a thumb drive and on his work-issued laptop at school. According to court documents, Myers allegedly admitted to being the person who communicated with the undercover agent.

Lewis said Myers had worked at Thompson Elementary in Mashall from 2004 to 2008, when he moved to Greenville Elementary in Nokesville. He was to start as principal at Brumfield in July 2011.

He has custody of his 3-year-old son after a divorce.

In a statement, Fauquier County Public Schools said that the school board is "deeply troubled and disturbed" over the allegations against Myers. It also states that there is no indication that children enrolled at any school in the county were involved in the circumstances leading to his arrest.
